Alternative Payment Methods to MAS

Post by Mike1224 »

Hello!

First of all, congratulations on the release of the new version 5!

I have been an avid user of iCompta for a couple of years now, and am excited with the new set of powerful features and refined design. I have tried out the demo version for a couple of days, very much liked it, and decided to go for the upgrade!

However, I just realized that the software is now provided solely through the Mac App Store, and seems that the payment methods by credit card or paypal, which I believe was present in the previous versions, are now missing.

It would be very nice of you if I could pay and receive my license through the conventional methods, whether credit cards or paypal or any other means, independent of the Apple's software distributions platform.

Many thanks,

Michel

This is not possible because MAS is required to use iCloud.

Hi, Angeman.

Thanks for the reply!
It has been a while since my last post, but allow me to make this request one more time :)

First of all, it is perfectly okay for me if the software does not support iCloud sync. I do not use cloud services to store my financial data due to privacy concerns. Yes, manual WiFi Sync is a bit tedious, but I have been used to it for years, so I will stick to it :) (By the way, I would very much love it if iCompta had WebDAV support! I can then host my own sync server!)

I am very keen on upgrading to the newest version 5 of iCompta, but the only thing that holds me back is that, unlike the previous versions, the copy and license can only be obtained through Mac App Store.

As many of you may be already aware of, there has been quite a few posts on the web on the potential problems of MAS software distribution platform. I do not intend to cover them all here, but I share similar concerns and even experienced some of them myself: The main reason I avoid using the MAS, as I explain a little in detail below, is that, simply put, the MAS adds another set of complexity and restraint to my resource management and deployment strategy.

The first, and one of my largest concern is the longevity of the software: if Apple (or the developer) decided to discontinue the software, it would be very difficult for the end users to continue using it. Indeed, if, after being discontinued, the end user bought a new machine, he would not be able to obtain the software in the first place, nor can he simply transfer the software from his old machine to the new one (the end user needs to ask for permission from the Apple’s server to run the software on his new machine, but this would not be possible): there would be practically no way for him to use the software on his new machine! Yes, I myself experienced this several times…

The second reason is that, since the end user cannot keep the generic installer or the application bundle, it severely limits my deployment strategy. I like to prepare an install image of the OS beforehand, bundled with software and settings I use most often. Then, in case of buying a new machine or performing a clean install, I can just install the image on the machine, which greatly reduces time, work and human error, which are otherwise often prone to manual procedure. This, however, is generally not possible with software purchased through MAS, since each software is tied to a unique machine. Also, I don’t really like the idea that every time I want to install a piece of software, I have to ask Apple for permission…

I really love this program and heavily rely on it to manage my financial data.
I would be very happy if you could also provide it through the conventional methods, by credit cards or PayPal, etc.

Many thanks,

Michel
