Sync not in background

I'm running V5 of iCompTA on OSX and iOS and sync does NOT work in the background, nor can it actually be manually done. No button for it.
But I can tell the software to 'save' the file before closing and it syncs just fine. According to the documentation, that is not how it is supposed to work.
For info: OSX is Yosemite on MBPr late 2012, iOS8.x (whatever the latest is) on iPad Air 2.

Hitting cmd-S or (File > Save) is the dedicated way to start synchronizing with iCloud or Dropbox.

I now understand that, but it is not documented anywhere and needs to be.
The automatic syncing does not occur regardless and the documentation says it should be doing that. I know it is a bit nit picking, but it is oft times the little things that make the difference between 'wonderful' and 'ho hum'. Because the auto doesn't work, and the manual is not really documented other than saying you can, I was almost at the point of asking for a refund. By a stroke of luck, I did a 'save' and found out that made it sync. I thought, and most software these days does, that closing the app would either auto-save/sync or at least ask if I wanted to.
Thanks for the feedback, it is appreciated.

It's explained in the user guide, in the "Step by step to activate Dropbox or iCloud synchronization" paragraph :
