Transactions vs Splits

Post by zh_olga »

Hi Angeman

Could you explain what's the difference between transactions and splits?
I'm not sure I get the thinking behind having categories under "splits"
Also in reports you have separate windows for transactions and separate for splits - what is that for?

thanks

A split is just a division of a transaction, it's a way to separate a transaction into 2 different categories for example.

That was my understanding too
But I guess what I'm trying to understand is -- when creating reports you have transactions filter and then splits filter separately -- what is that for?
Is there any difference in putting category is X in transaction filter and category is X in splits filter?

Transactions filter acts on the transaction level so if a transaction doesn't pass the filter its splits are not processed. If you put a condition to exclude a category in the transactions filter for example, all of the splits of the transaction will be excluded from the report whereas only the split with the condition will be excluded if you put it in the splits filter.

Why cannot I set a category, a project, or an owner to a simple transaction? Why do I need to create splits even when a transaction is related only to one thing? I would like to understand your thinking...

A split is automatically created for you when you create a transaction so you can set a category, a project, or an owner to a simple transaction as you say.
